Troubleshooting Piston and Hydrostatic Pumps and Their Impact on the System and Diesel Engine

Piston and hydrostatic pumps are widely used in industrial hydraulic systems and heavy machinery due to their high efficiency and ability to operate under high pressure. However, if they are faulty, worn out, or improperly adjusted, they can cause issues such as performance loss, excessive load on the engine, unusual leaks, pressure drop, and even engine smoke. Below, we examine 10 of the most common problems in these pumps and recommended solutions to fix them.

• Relief valve stuck closed or incorrectly set
• Blocked return line or clogged return filter
• Malfunction of pressure control valves
• Incorrect hydraulic oil viscosity (too thick)
• Low oil temperature at startup
• Faulty pressure sensor or incorrect control signal
• Failure of main control valve relief cartridges
• Wear or damage on swash plate and support plate preventing proper destroking, plus incorrect pressure settings on the pump

• Excessive internal leakage due to worn pistons, cylinder block, or swash plate
• Oil overheating causing a drop in viscosity and volumetric efficiency
• Wear or damage on support plate or swash plate reducing stroke angle
